Using specialist Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and reinforcement detection technology, we investigate reinforced concrete before drilling, coring, cutting, resin anchoring and other intrusive works.

GPR Scanning

Non-destructive investigation of reinforced concrete before drilling, coring and structural alterations.

Rebar Detection

Identify reinforcement position, direction, approximate spacing and indicative depth within surveyed areas.

On-Site Mark-Up

Detected reinforcement and relevant survey responses can be marked directly onto accessible concrete surfaces.

Technical Reporting

Annotated photographs, processed GPR information, survey reports and CAD deliverables available where required.

Planning drilling, coring, cutting or structural fixings into reinforced concrete? Magnitude Geo provides professional concrete scanning and rebar detection throughout London, the Home Counties and South East England.

Our surveys can investigate reinforcement within concrete slabs, walls, beams, columns and soffits before intrusive works commence.

Whether you require scanning before core drilling, diamond drilling, service penetrations, resin anchors or structural alterations, we can develop a survey approach appropriate to the proposed works.

Send us your structural drawings, photographs and marked-up drilling or survey locations where available. Our team can review the information and provide a free, no-obligation quotation.

Why Scan Concrete Before Drilling?

Existing reinforced concrete can contain multiple reinforcement layers, conduits and other embedded features that cannot be identified reliably from the visible surface alone.

Targeted concrete scanning allows the proposed work area to be investigated before intrusive works commence. Survey findings can then be reviewed by the contractor, structural engineer or project team when considering drilling and fixing locations.

Core Drilling
Targeted scanning around proposed core locations.
Diamond Drilling
Reinforcement investigation before penetrations are formed.
Resin Anchors
Investigation of reinforcement across proposed fixing zones.
Structural Alterations
Concrete investigation before cutting and new openings.

GPR Concrete Scanning Before Drilling

Ground Penetrating Radar is a non-destructive investigation method used to collect information from within reinforced concrete. Radar signals are transmitted into the structure and reflected responses are recorded for interpretation.

Depending on the concrete construction, survey conditions and required investigation depth, GPR can provide information regarding reinforcement position, direction, approximate spacing and indicative depth.

The technique can be particularly useful where information is required beyond the first reinforcement layer or where a larger area of concrete needs to be systematically investigated.

Rebar Detection Before Drilling

Reinforcing steel is one of the principal features investigated during pre-drilling concrete surveys.

Where reinforcement responses can be clearly identified, their positions can be marked onto the accessible concrete surface. This provides the drilling or construction team with a practical visual reference to the detected reinforcement arrangement.

More detailed surveys can investigate reinforcement direction, approximate spacing and indicative depth across selected areas.

Concrete Scanning Before Core & Diamond Drilling

Core and diamond drilling can create penetrations through a significant proportion of an existing reinforced concrete element.

Magnitude Geo can undertake targeted scanning around proposed core positions before drilling begins. Surveys can cover individual penetrations or larger areas containing multiple proposed drilling locations.

Where required, detected reinforcement can be marked onto the concrete surface so that survey findings can be reviewed against proposed core positions before intrusive work commences.

  • Single core drilling locations
  • Multiple service penetrations
  • Diamond drilling zones
  • Mechanical penetrations
  • New service routes
  • Structural openings

Scanning Before Resin Anchors & Structural Fixings

Concrete scanning can support the installation of resin anchors, mechanical anchors, structural brackets, steelwork connections and other fixings into existing reinforced concrete.

Where several anchors or fixings are proposed, a wider survey can help establish the reinforcement arrangement across the fixing zone rather than investigating individual positions in isolation.

Targeted reinforcement scanning can also support refurbishment and structural alteration projects where original structural drawings are unavailable or additional verification of the existing construction is required.

Concrete Floors, Slabs, Walls, Beams & Soffits

Magnitude Geo can undertake GPR and reinforcement scanning across a range of accessible reinforced concrete elements before drilling, cutting and structural alterations.

Concrete Slabs

Reinforcement investigation before floor penetrations, openings, drilling and structural modifications.

Concrete Walls

Targeted scanning before drilling, service penetrations, fixings and new openings.

Beams & Columns

Localised reinforcement investigations around proposed structural connections and fixings.

Concrete Soffits

Scanning from the underside where access to the upper surface of a concrete slab is restricted.

For slab-specific investigations, visit our Concrete Slab Scanning London page.

Concrete Soffit & Underside Slab Scanning

Where the upper surface of a concrete slab cannot be accessed, GPR scanning may be undertaken from the underside of the structure.

This approach can be particularly useful within basements, commercial buildings, car parks and refurbishment projects where the upper floor surface is occupied, covered or otherwise inaccessible.

When scanning from the underside, interpreted depth information is referenced from the soffit surface being scanned.

Survey grids can also be marked onto the accessible ceiling surface to provide a physical reference for detected reinforcement and future measurements.

Concrete Scanning Survey Deliverables

Survey outputs can be tailored to the requirements of each project. Small targeted surveys may require physical site mark-ups, while larger structural investigations can require processed survey information and formal reporting.
